Removal
Proceed with removal in the following order:
- turn off the ignition and disconnect the ground wire from the battery;
- disconnect the wide hose from the cylinder head cover;
- remove the high-voltage wire leads from the spark plugs by pulling them up and turning them at the same time;
- use a jet of compressed air to clean the spark plugs, which will prevent dirt from getting into the engine cylinder after removing the spark plugs. Remove the spark plugs;
- remove the screws securing the wiring harness to the timing belt cover and move the wiring harness to the side;
- release the clamp securing the accelerator cable to the intake manifold and move it to the side;

The material was taken from a resource ToyotaMan
- remove the round nuts securing the cylinder head cover to the spark plug tubes (figure 3.2);
- remove the cylinder head cover. If it is tight, tap it with a mallet or insert a pry bar between the cylinder head and the cover and pry it up.
Caution! When using a pry bar, be careful not to damage the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and cover, as this will cause engine oil to leak through the damaged area.
Installation
Perform installation in the following order:
- clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and cover. Use a plastic scraper to remove any remaining old gasket and sealant, then clean the surfaces with solvent. If traces of gasket or engine oil remain on the surfaces, oil leaks may occur in these areas after the cover is installed;
Figure 3.3. Places where RTV sealant is applied to the cylinder head
- apply a layer of RTV sealant to the eight locations shown in Figure 3.3. Install the spark plug tube seals into the cover so that the index marks on the seals face the timing belt;
- install a new cover gasket onto the head, then install the cylinder head cover and secure it with the ring nuts, tightening them in several equal passes.
Further installation of the cover is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
