Examination
Pic. 9.2. The location of the reversing light switch on top of the gearbox housing
The reversing light switch is located on top of the gearbox housing (pic. 9.2).
Turn the ignition on and engage reverse gear with the switch turning on the reverse lights.
If the reverse lights do not come on, check the fuse in the reverse light circuit.
If the fuse is good, then disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and use an ohmmeter to check the condition of its contacts, which should be closed when the reverse gear is engaged (resistance is 0). Place the shift lever in the neutral position, while the switch contacts should open and the ohmmeter should show infinite resistance (lack of conduction). In case of malfunction, replace the switch.
If the switch is OK, check the condition of the electrical circuit between the fuse and the switch. If the electrical circuit is OK, the bulbs in the reversing lights may have burned out.
If the bulbs in the reversing lights are OK, check the wire connecting the switch to the bulbs.
Replacement
Disconnect the electrical connector from the reversing light switch.
Remove the switch from the gearbox housing.
Check the new switch before installation. Connect an ohmmeter to the switch contacts and make sure that when the switch plunger is pressed, the contacts are closed, and when released, they are open.
Screw the switch into the gearbox housing and tighten it to the required torque.
Connect the electrical connector to the switch.
Check the operation of the reverse lights.
