Examination

Figure 9.2. Location of the reversing light switch on top of the gearbox housing

The reversing light switch is located on top of the gearbox housing (figure 9.2).

Turn on the ignition and engage reverse gear, the switch should turn on the reversing lights.

If the reversing lights do not come on, check the fuse in the reversing light circuit for a fault.

If the fuse is working properly, then disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and use an ohmmeter to check the condition of its contacts, which should be closed when the reverse gear is engaged (resistance is 0). Place the gear shift lever in neutral position, the switch contacts should open and the ohmmeter should show infinite resistance (lack of conductivity). If faulty, replace the switch.

If the switch is working properly, check the condition of the electrical circuit between the fuse and the switch. If the electrical circuit is OK, the bulbs in the reversing lights may be burned out.

If the bulbs in the reversing lights are working properly, check the wire connecting the switch to the bulbs.

Replacement

Disconnect the electrical connector from the reverse light switch.

Unscrew the switch from the gearbox housing.

Test the new switch before installation. Connect an ohmmeter to the switch contacts and make sure that when the switch plunger is pressed, the contacts are closed, and when released, the contacts are open.

Screw the switch into the gearbox housing and tighten it to the specified torque.

Connect the electrical connector to the switch.

Check the operation of the reversing lights.
