Here are some of the alternatives to a major overhaul.
Purchase of individual spare parts
If the inspection shows that the cylinder block and most of the parts are in satisfactory condition and can be used in the future, then it is most economically feasible to purchase individual spare parts. The cylinder block, connecting rod and piston group and the crankshaft should be examined especially carefully. Even if slight wear of the cylinder block is detected, the cylinders are subject to obligatory honing.
Partial cylinder block
A crank mechanism and a piston group are installed in the incomplete cylinder block. All mating parts are selected according to size groups, all clearances comply with the standards. Camshafts, valve mechanism, cylinder head and mounted units are separately mounted on the block. Machining costs are minimal or not required at all.
Rebuilt engine
A remanufactured engine contains the entire partial cylinder block set plus the oil pump, oil pan, cylinder head, cylinder head cover, camshafts, valve train, camshaft pulleys/sprocket, timing belt/chain and covers. All parts are installed with new bearings, seals and gaskets. Only the intake and exhaust manifolds and attachments are mounted on the kit.
Carefully consider which alternative is best for you, before purchasing or before placing an order for spare parts, consult an auto repair shop, parts suppliers, and engine rebuilders.
