The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) system used on Canadian models is designed to require the headlights to be on whenever the engine is running. The only exception is when the parking brake is applied while the engine is running. The lights come on immediately after the parking brake is released and remain on as long as the ignition is on, even if the parking brake is subsequently applied.
The DRL system provides limited power to the headlights so that they do not burn too brightly during daytime use in order to extend the life of the lamps.
