Daytime Running Lights (DRL) — General Information [Toyota RAV4 XA20]

1. The daytime running light system, which is required by law in some countries for all newly manufactured vehicles, turns on the headlights when the engine is started (see Figure 25.1).



The only exception is when starting the engine with the parking brake applied. Once the parking brake is released, the daytime running lights come on and remain on as long as the ignition is on, even if the parking brake is subsequently applied. The DRL system supplies reduced voltage to the headlights so that they do not unnecessarily blind oncoming and passing drivers during the day, and so that the life of the headlights does not suffer as a result.
