Models 1999-2003.

1. The cruise control system maintains vehicle speed using a vacuum-operated actuator located in the engine compartment. This actuator is connected by a cable to the throttle body. The system consists of a cruise control unit, a brake switch sensor, control switches, a vacuum hose, and a vehicle speed sensor. Some system functions require special testers and procedures to diagnose that are beyond the scope of this manual. Below are some general procedures that can be used to troubleshoot common problems.

2. Locate and check the fuse (see paragraph 3).

3. Check the brake light switch (see chapter 9).

4. Visually inspect the control cable between the actuator and the accelerator pedal for freedom of movement. Replace if necessary.

5. Road test the vehicle to determine if the cruise control now works. If not, take it to the dealer for further diagnostics.

Models 2004 and later

6. These models use an electronically controlled throttle body, i.e. there is no accelerator cable. The accelerator pedal communicates with the throttle body via the powertrain control module (PCM) (For more information on the electronic throttle control system, refer to Chapters 4 and 6). The PCM also controls the cruise control system, which is now integrated into the electronic throttle control system. If there is a fault with the system, contact your dealer's service department or another suitably equipped service station for further diagnosis.
