Inspect and repair exhaust system components only after they have completely cooled down.

The exhaust system ensures the removal of exhaust gases into the atmosphere, reducing the concentration of pollutants, and reducing engine noise to the required level with minimal loss of engine power. For the exhaust system to perform its functions, it must be in good working order. The condition of the exhaust system also affects engine power and fuel consumption.

The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold, an exhaust pipe, a catalytic converter and mufflers.

Exhaust pipes provide connections between the elements of the exhaust system.

Mufflers are designed to smooth out pulsations in the exhaust gas flow and reduce noise levels. The operation of mufflers is based on two physical effects: resonance and sound absorption. Typically, mufflers use a combination of these effects.

Resonant mufflers consist of chambers of varying lengths connected by pipes. The difference in cross-sectional areas of the pipes and chambers, the change in the direction of exhaust gas flow and the presence of resonators together with connecting pipes and chambers ensure optimal noise reduction, especially at low frequencies.

The exhaust system is attached to the bottom of the vehicle using elastic elements to reduce vibration from the passage of exhaust gases.

With the engine cold, check the condition of the exhaust system along its entire length.

Check pipes and their connections for leaks, signs of corrosion and damage. If the exhaust system components are corroded, remove them from the exhaust system and replace them with new ones. If disconnecting the exhaust pipes is difficult, use an oxyacetylene welder to heat the joint and separate the pipes.

Check that all brackets and exhaust system mounting components are in good condition and evenly tensioned.

When moving the car's exhaust system sideways, make sure it does not touch the car body. Otherwise, replace the rubber exhaust mounts.

When repairing the exhaust system, be sure to follow these conditions:
  • when removing exhaust system components, start from the rear;
  • to make it easier to loosen the nuts and bolts that connect the exhaust system components, first soak them in a fluid that loosens the connections;
  • when installing, it is necessary to use new gaskets, rubber hangers and exhaust system mounting clamps;
  • before reinstalling the system elements, clean the joints with sandpaper to remove any remaining sealant and rust;
  • to make subsequent unscrewing easier, lubricate the nuts and bolts securing the exhaust system with high-temperature paste.

After working on the exhaust system, check that the system is installed freely, without tension, and that there is sufficient clearance from the body components.
