The diagnostic procedures and tests below apply only to Toyota RAV4 vehicles equipped with the Toyota TCCS injection system with dynamic ignition.
The electrical characteristics of the components of this electronic fuel injection and ignition system were obtained using a universal measuring device, to which specific automotive functions were integrated, such as an RPM sensor, fuel injection timing, oxygen sensor, etc.
Before carrying out diagnostics, be sure to check:
- engine starting system (battery, starter and wires);
- quality and availability of fuel in the fuel tank;
- exhaust gas recirculation system;
- air supply system (tightness of pipes, gaskets and various connecting parts), air filter and thermostat in the filter housing;
- accelerator cable for the absence of a slow return to the initial position and full opening of the throttle valve;
- crankcase ventilation system;
- fuel system tightness;
- compression and engine condition;
- spark plugs;
- fuse for electronic fuel injection and ignition systems.
The diagnostic procedure should begin with an analysis of the faults (symptoms).
Figure 5.23. Location and numbering of control unit connector contacts: A - with a manual transmission; B - with automatic transmission
Electrical connector contacts are designated by a number and a letter, for example, contact 1A is contact No. 1 of electrical connector A (figure 5.23).
Checking the electrical power supply of the electronic injection system
All EFI and Ignition System electrical power tests must be performed with the connectors connected, except for the ECM connector. The verification tests are given in Table. 5.2.
Checking the electrical resistance of sensors
All sensor resistance tests must be performed at the ECU connectors. The tests are given in the table. 5.3.
Checking the electrical power supply of the sensors
All sensor electrical power testing must be performed at the ECU connector. The tests are given in the table. 5.4.
Checking the fuel supply system components
Checking the elements of the fuel supply system is given in the table. 5.5.
Checking the general electrical supply of the electronic fuel injection system
All EFI system general electrical supply tests must be performed with connectors connected, except for the ECM connector. The tests are given in the table. 5.6.
