Checking the exhaust system
1. Let the engine cool down (at least three hours after the trip), check the entire exhaust system from the exhaust manifold to the tailpipe. To perform this operation, a lift or inspection pit is required.
2. Leaks and corrosion indicate potential problems. Make sure all brackets and rubber mounts are in good condition.
3. If leaks are detected in the exhaust system due to burnouts, leaks, etc., exhaust gases may enter the passenger compartment. Sealing the fistulas with various types of putty helps only for a short time.
4. Vibration and other sounds can be caused by friction of parts of the exhaust system against the body and suspension. Shake the muffler, exhaust pipe, resonator, catalytic converter - if they touch the body, replace the faulty parts of the exhaust system suspension (see Figure 26.4).

5. Check the engine condition through the exhaust pipe outlet. A pipe covered with soot indicates at least the need to adjust the engine fuel system. An oil ring around the pipe indicates excessive oil consumption due to burning.
