Replacing brake fluid

Caution! Brake fluid can not only damage the paintwork but also cause serious eye injury if it gets into your eyes. Be extremely careful when handling brake fluid. Do not use liquid that has been stored in an open container for more than a year; the fluid absorbs moisture from the air, which can lead to "loss of brakes.".

1. Brake fluid must be replaced regularly, at the prescribed intervals. To protect the painted surfaces of the car body from spilled liquid, lay out rags.

2. Before starting work, stock up on fresh liquid (see "Liquids and lubricants").

3. Remove the cap from the brake cylinder reserve reservoir.

4. Remove as much liquid as possible from the tank by pumping it out, for example, with a medical syringe.

5. Pour fresh fluid into the tank up to the neck.

6. Bleed the system as described in chapter 9, removing the old fluid from all four brake mechanisms until the; nipples for pumping fresh fluid. Monitor the fluid level in the reserve tank to prevent air from entering the system.

7. Bring the fluid level in the reservoir to the normal level and check the operation of the brakes. The pedal should feel "hard" when pressed.

Caution! Do not operate the vehicle unless you are sure that its brakes are in good working order.
