Removal the engine
If you have decided to remove the engine for a major overhaul, there are some preliminary steps you should take. Before you decide to undertake this activity, please read all instructions carefully. The engines considered here are removed from the car down to the floor, assembled with the automatic transmission - the power unit. The car will then need to be raised high enough to pull the engine out from underneath it; one jack will not be enough to complete this task - you will need a hoist and a lift.
Preparing the workplace is especially important. It is desirable that the work area provides sufficient space around the vehicle and its safety. If you don't have a workshop or garage, in the worst case scenario, you can get by with a level, clean area with a concrete or asphalt surface.
Washing and cleaning the engine compartment and power unit before starting repairs will help keep not only the tools clean and tidy.
Since a vehicle lift, hoist, overhead crane, manual or electric hoist will be required, ensure that the equipment has the appropriate lifting capacity. Safety comes first, considering the potential hazards of removing an engine from a vehicle.
If you are removing an engine for the first time, having an assistant would be extremely helpful. Advice and help from an experienced specialist will always come in handy. When removing an engine from a car, there are many situations where it is impossible to handle it alone.
Plan your actions in advance. Before you begin, gather all the necessary tools and equipment you may need. Some equipment will help you remove and install the engine safely and make the job easier (in addition to the hoist: a heavy-duty trolley jack, a complete set of wrenches and sockets as listed at the end of this manual, wooden blocks and wedges, plenty of clean rags and sawdust to soak up spilled oil, fuel, and antifreeze, cleaning solvent). If it is possible to rent a lift, arrange this in advance and perform all work that does not require the use of a lift. This will save you time and money.
Adjust your plans taking into account that you won't be able to use this car for very long. You will need the help of engineers and mechanics from a car repair shop to carry out restoration work that you will not be able to do yourself without the appropriate equipment and experience. These shops usually have tight schedules, and it's helpful to schedule your work with them before removing the engine.
