1. It is much more convenient to repair the engine if it is installed on a mounting stand. Such equipment is often available even in small workshops. Before installing the engine on the stand, the flywheel/faceplate must be removed to allow the stand bolts to be threaded into the rear of the engine block.

2. If a stand is not available, you can disassemble the engine by placing it on a sturdy workbench or, at worst, on the floor, placing a sheet of plywood underneath. Be extremely careful and attentive, do not tip over or hit the engine when working without a stand.

3. If you are going to purchase a rebuilt engine, remove the following external components and parts from the old engine for installation on the newly purchased engine:
  • Fuel vapor collection system components.
  • Distributor (models with gasoline engines produced before 1997).
  • High-voltage wires and spark plugs (gasoline engines).
  • Ignition coils (models produced since 1998).
  • Glow plugs/preheating system components (diesel engines).
  • Thermostat and housing cover.
  • Water pump (models produced since 2001).
  • Bypass pipes of the cooling system, where they are.
  • Fuel injection system components (gasoline engines).
  • Intake and exhaust manifolds.
  • Oil filter.
  • Engine mount brackets.
  • Clutch and flywheel/faceplate.
  • Rear engine cover (models produced before 2000).

Note: When removing engine components, pay attention to small parts that will be useful during assembly - bushings, washers, pins, bolts, fasteners, etc. Remember (better yet, write it down) place of their installation.

4. If you purchase an engine in an incomplete assembly (block assembled with crankshaft and piston group), then you will need to remove the cylinder head, oil pan, oil pump and lower crankcase of the cylinder block (models with gasoline engines produced since 2001), water pump (models with gasoline engines produced before 2000) and timing drive.

5. If you plan to do a major engine overhaul, you will need to completely disassemble the engine, including removing the internal components, in the following order:
  • Timing belt covers, timing belt, tensioner and tension rollers (part A or IN of this chapter).
  • Timing Cover, Timing Chain and Related Componentsi (part B of this chapter).
  • Intake and exhaust manifolds (partsA, B and IN of this chapter).
  • Cylinder head (partsA, B and IN of this chapter).
  • Oil pan (partsA, B and IN of this chapter).
  • Piston group (paragraph 12).
  • Flywheel/faceplate (part A or IN of this chapter).
  • Oil pump (part A, B or IN of this chapter).
  • Crankshaft (paragraph 13).

6. Before you begin the engine disassembly and overhaul procedures, prepare all the necessary tools (see section "Tools and equipment").
