When the ignition key is turned to the start position, the starter motor control circuit activates the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid then connects the battery to the starter. The battery supplies power to the starter, which actually cranks the engine.
Be sure to observe the following precautions when working on the trigger system:
- A) Cranking the engine for too long can cause it to overheat and cause a serious malfunction. Never operate the starter for more than 15 seconds at a time. Allow it to cool down for at least two minutes before switching it on again.
- b) The starter is connected directly to the battery. If it is mishandled, overloaded, or short circuited, it may cause sparks or fire.
- V) Before working with the starting system, be sure to disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
