The battery charging indicator lamp located on the instrument panel should come on when the ignition key is turned to the start position, and then should go out immediately. If it stays on or comes on when the vehicle is moving, there is a problem with the charging system
Normally, the charging system does not require periodic maintenance. However, the drive belt, battery, and wires and connectors should be inspected at the intervals specified in chapter 1. Be very careful when mating electrical connectors on vehicles equipped with a generator and keep the following points in mind:
- a) When connecting the wires coming from the battery to the generator, observe the polarity.
- 6) Disconnect the wires from the alternator and from the battery before using the arc test equipment to repair any part of the vehicle.
- V) Never start the engine with the charger connected.
- G) Be sure to disconnect both wires from the battery before using the charger.
- d) The generator is driven by a drive belt. With the engine running, this belt can cause serious injury if hands, hair or clothing gets caught under it.
- e) Since the alternator is connected directly to the battery, if it is overloaded or short circuited, it may cause sparks or fire.
- and) Before steam cleaning the engine, cover the generator with a plastic bag and secure the bag with rubber bands.
