Pic. 1.4. Key positions in the ignition lock (the detailed description of the relevant key positions are given below): 1 – LOCK; 2 – ACC; 3 – ON; 4 – START
Depending on the equipment, the electronic system can block the ignition system, fuel system and starter if the ignition key is not recognized by it. Such keys have a special electronic device, which must be protected from bumps and drops, exposure to extreme temperatures, ultrasound and electromagnetic fields. Possible positions of the ignition key are shown in fig. 1.4.
Warning! When you leave the car, even for a short time, be sure to remove the key from the ignition. This is especially important when children are left in the car. They may start the engine or turn on an electrical device, such as a power window, which could result in injury or an accident.
Attention! Remove the key from the ignition only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop so that the steering lock does not engage.
Attention! To prevent the vehicle from rolling uncontrollably after the vehicle has come to a complete stop, always apply the parking brake.
Description of relevant ignition key positions
Position «LOCK» (steering wheel lock)
To lock the steering, turn the steering wheel with the ignition key removed until the steering lock pin clicks into place.
Position «ACC» (optional equipment)
Ignition off. Some optional equipment remains on, such as the radio.
If the ignition key does not turn or is difficult to turn to this position, move the steering wheel slightly to the left and right to unlock it.
Position «ON» (ignition on)
The ignition is on. All additional features are included.
Position «START» (engine start)
Starting the engine with a starter.
In this position, the external lighting is turned off and the parking lights are turned on, large consumers of electricity are turned off.
Before each new attempt to start the engine, the ignition key must be returned to the ACC position. The starter restart interlock located in the ignition lock prevents the starter from turning on when the engine crankshaft rotates and thereby protects the starter from damage.
Ignition lock
On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the key can only be removed after the ignition is switched off when the selector is in position «R».
With the ignition key removed, the selector is locked in this position.
