Replacing the throttle position sensor (TPS) [Toyota RAV4 XA10]

The throttle position sensor (TPS) is located at the end of the throttle shaft on the throttle body. By monitoring the output voltage from the TPS, the PCM adjusts fuel delivery based on the throttle valve opening angle (driver's demand). A loose or faulty TPS will cause the engine to run rough and idle speed to fluctuate because the PCM will think the throttle plate is turning.

Replace the throttle position sensor (TPS) as follows.

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the throttle position sensor.

Remove the screws and the throttle position sensor from the throttle body (figure 7.6, 7.7).

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
