Examination



1. The brake light contact sensor is mounted on the bracket at the top of the brake pedal (see Figure 14.1). When you press the brake pedal, the sensor closes the contacts of the rear brake lights, and they light up.

2. Checking the operation of the brake light contact sensor is simple: when you press the brake pedal, the brake lights should light up; when the brake pedal is released, the brake lights should go out. If this does not happen, check the fuse first (see chapter 12). If the fuse is intact, adjust the sensor as described in paragraph 14 (adjusting the brake light contact sensor is part of the brake pedal adjustment procedure).

3. If the brake lights still don't come on, this could be due to a lack of power to the sensor, a faulty sensor, or an open circuit between the sensor and the brake lights. It's unlikely that both brake light bulbs will burn out at the same time, but it can sometimes happen—they can burn out one after the other.

4. Check with a voltmeter or test lamp that the supply voltage is supplied to the sensor connector from the fuse box side. If there is no voltage, determine the fault in the circuit between the sensor and the fuse box. If voltage is present, check the voltage at the mating connector with the brake pedal depressed. If there is no voltage, replace the sensor. If voltage is present, determine the fault in the circuit between the sensor and the brake lights (see Electrical Equipment Diagrams in Chapter 12).

Removal



5. Disconnect the wiring connector from the brake light sensor.

6. Loosen the lock nut and unscrew the sensor from the bracket on the brake pedal.

Installation



7. Installation of the brake light contact sensor is carried out in the reverse order of its removal.
