Cable - equalizer plate/operating lever
Removal
1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system, then disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
2. Loosen the nuts on the corresponding wheel, raise the rear of the vehicle and install secure safety supports. Place chocks under the front wheels. Remove the wheel. Make sure the parking brake is fully released, then remove the brake drum.
3. Remove the brake pads and disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever (see paragraph 6).
4. Unscrew the two cable mounting bolts on the brake shield (see Figure 13.4) and pull the cable through the brake shield.

5. Remove the fuel tank (see chapter 4A) and remove the heat shields from the top of the exhaust system.
6. Loosen the cable mounting bolts on the trailing arm and the underbody of the vehicle, then disconnect the cable from the equalizer plate.
Installation
7. The cable is installed in the reverse order of its removal. Apply a small amount of grease to the end of the cable where it attaches to the equalizer plate.
8. After finishing the work, adjust the parking brake (see paragraph 12).

Removal
9. Remove the center console (see chapter 11).
10. Fully release the parking brake (lever in the lower position), unscrew the lock nut and adjusting nut (see paragraph 12) and disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.
11. Raise the rear of the vehicle and install secure safety supports. Chock the front wheels.
12. Remove, if necessary, the upper exhaust system heat shields to gain access to the equalizer plate.
13. Turn the cable end 90° to disconnect it from the equalizer plate.
14. Carefully pry up and pull out the rubber cable grommet on the underside of the vehicle and pull the cable through this hole.
Installation
15. The cable is installed in the reverse order of its removal. Apply a small amount of grease to the end of the cable where it attaches to the equalizer plate. Also apply silicone sealant to the sealing surface of the rubber bushing to ensure a watertight seal.
16. After finishing the work, adjust the parking brake (see paragraph 12).
