Parking brake adjustment [Toyota RAV4 XA20]

1. Applying moderate force, tighten the parking brake lever, counting the clicks. The brake should begin to "grab" on the second click; full tightening of the brake lever should be completed no more than at the eighth click. If the brake is fully applied too early, the brake may not release completely and the brake pads will rub against the drum. If the brake is fully applied after the prescribed number of clicks, it will not "hold" on a steep incline.

2. To access the parking brake cable adjuster, remove the center console (see chapter 11).

3. Loosen the lock nut (upper) while holding the adjusting nut (lower) with another wrench (see Figure 12.3).

Turn the adjusting nut until the parking brake is fully tightened within the specified number of clicks. Tighten the lock nut.

4. Install the center console.
