1. In most cases, to change the position of the electrically operated side rearview mirrors, two electric motors are used in each mirror - one for vertical and one for horizontal rotation of the mirror (see Figure 20.1).

Figure 20.1. Typical power side mirror system.

2. The power mirror control switch contains a toggle switch that controls the power supply to the right or left outside mirror. Lower the front door windows, turn on the ignition (do not start the engine) and check the rotation of both mirrors according to the switch commands.

3. Listen to the sounds coming from the mirrors as they turn.

4. If the sound is heard but the mirror remains motionless, the drive mechanism inside the mirror is likely faulty. To identify the fault, remove the mirror from the door and disassemble it.

5. If the mirror is motionless and no sound is heard, check the fuse (see paragraph 3).

6. If the fuse is intact, remove the mirror control switch and take it to a specialized workshop for inspection.

7. Check the electric drive motor ground connection. If necessary, refer to the electrical diagrams at the end of this chapter.

8. If the mirrors still do not unfold, remove the mirror and check with a tester, with the ignition on, for voltage supply to the mirror itself from the mirror switch.

9. If there is no voltage on the mirror in any of the switch positions, check the wiring from the switch to the mirror for an open circuit or short circuit.

10. If there is voltage, remove the mirror and test it by connecting it directly to the battery. Replace any faulty mirror.
