Replacing the air filter element

1. On models produced before 2000, the air filter housing is located on the left side of the engine compartment, and on models produced since 2001, it is located directly on top of the engine.

2. To remove the filter element, unhook the latches, remove the cover and, remembering the position in which it was installed, remove the filter element. (figure 15.2, a-c).

Figure 15.2,a. On models produced before 2000, unhook the latches (indicated by arrows) and remove the air filter housing cover.

Figure 15.2, c... remove the cover and take out the filter element.

3. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element. If the element is heavily soiled, discard it. If it is only dusty, it can be cleaned with compressed air, directing the flow from the inner surface to the outer one, and reused. The paper filter element cannot be washed; if compressed air does not clear it, discard it and install a new one. Try not to drop anything inside the case.

Warning. It is unacceptable to operate the engine without an air filter, even for a short time. Dust getting into the engine cylinders will quickly lead to the need for engine repair; random flashes into the intake manifold can cause engine fires.

4. Wipe the inside of the filter housing with a clean cloth.

5. Install the new filter element into the air filter housing, ensuring it is properly seated.

6. Install the cover in the reverse order of removal.
