Rear Window Defogger Switch Connector Pin Numbering

Checking the operation of the rear window defroster timer

1. Disconnect the battery from ground.

2. Pry the switch out of the panel and disconnect the connector.

3. Check for a circuit between terminals 1 and 3 of the connector on the relay side (see Fig. Rear Window Defogger Switch Connector Pin Numbering). If there is no circuit between the terminals, check the lamp.

4. Check the heater timer. To do this, connect the ()-terminal of the battery to terminal 2, and the (-)-terminal to terminal 4 of the switch, and connect a 3.4 W lamp between the ()-terminal of the battery and terminal 6 (see Fig. Checking the operation of the rear window defroster timer). Press the switch – the test and control lamps of the switch should light up and go out after 12–18 minutes. Otherwise, replace the switch.

5. Check the circuit from the switch connector side.

6. There should be a constant circuit between terminal 4 and ground.

7. When the ignition key is in the ACC or LOCK position, there should be no voltage between terminals 2 or 6 and ground.

8. When the ignition key is in the ON position, terminals 2 or 6 and ground should be energized.

9. Connect terminals 4 and 6 and make sure the heater is working properly.

10. If the results of one of the tests are negative, replace the switch.

11. Check the heater relay - there should be a circuit between terminals 1 and 2. When terminals 1 and 2 are powered (12 V), the circuit should be between terminals 3 and 5. The relay is located in the fuse box in the passenger compartment.

12. If the results of one of the tests are negative, replace the relay.
