The simplest checks

Before checking, make sure that the vehicle has sufficient fuel.

If the vehicle is equipped with an engine start coding system (immobilizer), then start the engine with other keys from the set. If the engine starts, then the cause is a broken ignition key. Check the key at the car service.

If you cannot start the engine using other keys, contact a car service center, as the anti-theft system may fail.

The starter does not turn the engine, or turns it weakly

1. Check the condition of the power cable terminals and the reliability of their fastening.

2. If the terminals are in good condition, turn on the interior lighting. If the lamps do not light or become dim (or go out) when the starter is turned on, the battery is discharged. In this case, start the engine from an additional battery or, if the car is equipped with a manual transmission and there is no catalytic converter, the engine can be started by pushing the car. Starting a diesel engine by pushing with a very discharged battery is usually not possible.

3. If the lights do not go out, but the engine does not start, then the engine needs adjustment or repair. In this case, contact the car service for qualified assistance.

Warning! Do not tow the engine. Otherwise, a collision may occur after the engine starts. Engines of the 4E-FE, 4A-FE, 7A-FE models must not be pushed either. The catalytic converter may become hot and cause a fire.

The starter turns the engine at normal speed, but the engine does not start

Petrol engines

1. Make sure all wiring connections are securely fastened (especially the connectors on the distributor and the fastening of the wires to the spark plugs).

2. If the connections are in satisfactory condition, then the reason for the failure to start is the over-enrichment of the mixture and filling of the cylinders with gasoline. In this case, follow subsection 1.35.1.

Diesel engines

3. If you tried to start the engine with an empty tank, you will need to bleed the air from the fuel system (see subsection 1.35.2).

4. If the air is removed, but the engine does not start, then repairs are required. In this case, contact the car service for qualified assistance.
