Steering wheel play check
Rudder play is determined by the distance between the points of increasing resistance in both directions.
1. Check the play on the rim of the steering wheel, for which put the wheels in the position of driving in a straight line and turn the steering wheel in both directions until resistance is felt. Increased play indicates wear on steering parts (steering wheel universal joints, steering knuckle bearing (on 4WD vehicles), rod ends, steering gear).
2. The wear of the suspension and steering parts is indicated by a strong rocking of the body when driving over bumps, tight steering, a strong tilt of the car when cornering.
3. Check the shock absorbers by shaking and releasing the car. Body vibrations after release are not allowed.
4. Raise the front of the car and place on stands.
5. Check the condition of the tires.
6. Check the condition of the steering shaft cardan joint. Inspect the rubber bushings and protective covers of the ball bearings of the suspension, the covers of the tips of the steering rack, the sectors of the steering mechanism and axle shafts, check for cracks, wear and tears, and the appearance of lubrication. Ask an assistant to turn the steering wheel and observe the operation of the steering mechanism, check for play in the joints, touching the body parts.
7. Rock the wheel in a vertical plane, holding the top and bottom edges. A barely perceptible movement of the wheel is allowed, a noticeable play indicates a weakening of the preload in the hub bearings and the need for their lubrication and adjustment.
8. Check the condition of the steering knuckle, for which shake it with a mount from the bottom up. Noticeable play is not allowed. Otherwise, disassemble and change the grease in the bearings.
9. Check the wear of the cardan joints in the forks and splines.
10. Check for leaks on the transmission and transfer case.
