Removing
1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
2. Remove the gearbox in the block with the drive axle (see chapter 7).
3. Use a center punch or paint to mark the crankshaft flange and faceplate to ensure proper installation alignment.
4. Turn out bolts of fastening of a faceplate to a cranked shaft. To keep the faceplate from turning when the bolts are loosened, use the appropriate special tool (sold at auto parts store), a screwdriver or a pry bar inserted through one of the holes into the faceplate.
5. Remove the faceplate, paying attention to the spacers you are not using and not which side of the faceplate they were installed on.
Installation
6. Inspect the faceplate. Find all the cracks in it. Carefully inspect it for any other damage.
7. Install the faceplate on the crankshaft flange, aligning the marks made during removal. Align the bolt holes. Please note that on some models, the bolt holes may be irregularly spaced to ensure correct installation.
8. Apply a non-curing thread locking compound to the bolt threads. Install the bolts and cross-tighten them to the specified torque specified in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter. Tighten in several stages until the final tightening torque is reached.
9. Install the gearbox in the block with the drive axle (see chapter 7).
