Removal
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
2. Remove the gearbox in the block with the drive axle (see chapter 7).
3. Using a center punch or paint, make alignment marks on the crankshaft flange and faceplate to ensure proper alignment during installation.
4. Loosen the bolts securing the faceplate to the crankshaft. Use the appropriate special tool to hold the faceplate from turning when loosening the bolts (sold in auto parts store), a screwdriver or a crowbar inserted through one of the holes in the faceplate.
5. Remove the faceplate, paying attention to which spacers are not used and which side of the faceplate they were installed on.
Installation
6. Inspect the faceplate. Identify any cracks in it. Inspect it carefully for any other damage.
7. Install the faceplate onto the crankshaft flange, aligning the marks made during removal. Align the bolt holes. Note that on some models the bolt holes may be irregularly spaced to ensure proper installation.

8. Apply non-curing threadlocking compound to the bolt threads. Insert the bolts and tighten them in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque as shown in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter. Tighten in several stages until the final torque value is reached.
9. Install the gearbox in the block with the drive axle (see chapter 7).
