Removal

Proceed with removal in the following order:
  • turn off the ignition and disconnect the ground wire from the battery;
  • disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils, unscrew the nuts securing the wiring harness to the cylinder head cover and move the wires to the side. Remove the ignition coils from each spark plug;
  • disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover;

  • unscrew the bolts (figure 3.53) and remove the cover and gasket from the cylinder head. If it is tight, tap it with a mallet or insert a knife between the cylinder head and the cover and pry it up. When using a knife, do not damage the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and cover, otherwise engine oil will leak at the damaged area.

Installation

Perform installation in the following order:
  • remove the gaskets and clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and cover;
  • install new rubber gaskets around the perimeter of the cover and around the spark plug holes and press them into the corresponding grooves;
  • make sure the mating surfaces of the front chain cover and cylinder head are clean and dry before installing the cover. If traces of engine oil remain on the surfaces, oil leaks may occur in these areas after the cover is installed;
  • apply a layer of RTV sealant to the joints between the front chain cover and the cylinder head and install the cylinder head cover;
  • screw in and tighten the cover mounting bolts in several passes.

Further installation of the cover is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

Start the engine and check for oil leaks from under the cylinder head cover.
