Replacement of cuffs of power shafts
Seals are located on the sides of the gearbox, where the drive shafts connect to the side gears of the differential. If fluid leaks through the drive shaft seals, the side surfaces of the gearbox housing will be covered with transmission fluid.
Raise the car on a lift.
Remove the drive shaft.
Pic. 9.10. Removing the drive shaft seal
Using a screwdriver blade or puller, remove the collar from the groove in the differential housing, taking care not to damage the groove surface (pic. 9.10).
Clear the groove for installing the cuff.
Lubricate the outer surface and the working edge of the new cuff with engine oil.
With a tubular mandrel with an outer diameter slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the collar, install the collar into the groove. Make sure the cuff is installed without distortion.
Installation depth of the sealing collar relative to the end of the groove in the differential housing, mm:
- right side on models from 1996 to 2001: -0.5...+ 0.5
- left side on models with one drive axle from 1996 to 2001: 4.7... 5.7
- both sides on all-wheel drive models from 1996 to 2001: -0.5... + 0.5
- both sides on single drive axle models from 2001: -0.5...+ 0.5
- right side on all-wheel drive models since 2001: -0.5...1.5
- left side on all-wheel drive models since 2001: -0.5...+ 0.5
Install the drive shaft, being careful not to damage the sealing lip.
Replacing the O-ring of the speed sensor
There are two speed sensors installed in the gearbox: one controls the speed of the input shaft, the other controls the output shaft. They are fixed in the same way: with a bolt that supports them at the required level. Sealing is carried out by an O-ring.
To replace the sealing ring, disconnect the sensor electrical connector, unscrew the bolt and remove the speed sensor from the gearbox housing.
Use a screwdriver blade to remove the O-ring from the sensor, install a new O-ring and lubricate it with transmission fluid.
Install in the reverse order of removal.
Replacing the cuff of the transfer case on all-wheel drive vehicles
Remove the cardan shaft.
Use a screwdriver blade to remove the old cuff, while not damaging the surface of the groove for installing the cuff and the splines of the shaft.
Clear the groove for installing the cuff.
Lubricate the surface of the new seal with engine oil.
With a tubular mandrel with an outer diameter slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the seal, install the new seal into the groove. Make sure that the cuff is installed without distortion to a depth of 1.1 to 1.9 mm.
Lubricate the splines and the outer surface of the flange in contact with the sealing collar, and install the propeller shaft.
