Warning! Vehicles are equipped with safety systems (SRS), including airbags and seat belt tensioners. Before working near the impact sensors, instrument panel and steering column, first disconnect the negative and then the positive terminals from the battery and wait about two minutes. This will prevent unauthorized deployment of airbags and seat belt tensioners, which could cause injury.

Replacement

While under the vehicle, remove the lower engine compartment splash shield.

Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.

Loosen the selector cable retaining nut and disconnect it from the gear selector lever on the front of the gearbox.

Remove the clamp and slide the cable housing off the bracket on the transmission.

Remove the center console.

Disconnect the cable from the bottom of the selector lever, then squeeze the clips and separate the cable housing from the selector lever housing.

Remove the cable from the sealing ring in the engine compartment bulkhead.

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

After installation, adjust the selector cable.

Adjustment

Loosen the nut that secures the selector cable to the gear selector lever on the front of the transmission.

Set the gear selector lever on the gearbox to the "N" position (figures 9.20, 9.21, 9.22).

Set the selector lever inside the vehicle to the "N" position.

An assistant should hold the selector lever inside the vehicle with slight pressure towards the "R" position while tightening the nut securing the selector cable to the gear selector lever on the gearbox.

When moving the selector lever, make sure that the gear selector lever also moves to the appropriate positions. In each position of the selector lever, try to start the engine. The starter should only engage when the selector lever is in positions "P" and "N".
