Spark plugs (diesel engines)

Examination

1. Remove the intercooler (see chapter 4B), then remove the top engine covers.

2. Disconnect the wiring connector from the coolant temperature sensor (see chapter 6B).

Note: This action may cause power to be supplied to the glow plugs regardless of engine coolant temperature.

3. Remove the protective bushings from the glow plug power terminals, then connect a 12-volt test lamp or voltmeter to the spark plug terminals and turn on the ignition. The voltmeter should show battery voltage for about 20 seconds. If there is no voltage, check the glow plug fuses and spark plug power relay (see chapter 12).

4. With the ignition off, remove the caps, then unscrew the nuts from the upper ends of the glow plugs and remove the power bus. Move the tire to the side.

5. Connect the clamp of one wire of the test lamp to the positive terminal of the battery, and with the probe of the other end, touch the spark plugs one by one. If the spark plug is normal, the light should come on.

6. Replace all defective spark plugs. Install the power bus and tighten the nuts, then connect the wiring connector to the coolant temperature sensor.

Replacement

7. If not already done, remove the intercooler (see chapter 4B) and top engine covers.

8. With the ignition off, remove the caps, then unscrew the nuts from the upper ends of the glow plugs and remove the power bus. Move the tire to the side (see figure 17.8, a, b).





9. Using a deep socket, remove the glow plugs from the cylinder head (see Figure 17.9).



10. Install the spark plugs in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the spark plugs to the torque specified in the Specifications in this chapter (see Figure 17.10).
