Attention: Depending on the type of engine, standard type spark plugs or spark plugs with platinum coated electrodes are installed.
Common type of spark plugs
- If necessary, the gap can be adjusted by bending the side electrode.
- Candles can be cleaned with a wire brush or sandblasted.
Spark plugs with platinum coated electrodes
- Never use a wire brush to clean this type of spark plug.
- Never attempt to adjust the gap on a used spark plug.
- Spark plugs should be replaced every 100,000 km of the car.
- The gap adjustment of a new candle must be carried out by bending only the side electrode at the base, without touching the central electrode.
1. Check spark plug electrodes.
If you have a megger, measure the electrical resistance of the insulator.
- Rated resistance - not less than 10 MΩ
If the resistance is less than acceptable, clean the spark plug.
In the absence of a megger
- A) Quickly increase the engine speed to 4000 rpm five times.
- b) Remove spark plugs (see above).
- V) Visually assess the condition of the spark plug.
If the electrodes are dry, then the test can be completed.
If the electrodes are wet, then go to the next step.
2. Disconnect high voltage wires from spark plugs.
3. Remove the spark plugs using a spark plug wrench.
4. Visually check the condition of the spark plugs for worn electrodes, damaged threads and/or insulator. Replace spark plugs if necessary.
Recommended spark plugs:
4A-FE, 7A-FE
- ND — PK20R13
- NGK — BKR6EP13
5A-FE
- ND — K16R-U11
- NGK — BKR5EYA11
3S-FE, 4S-FE
- ND — K20R-U11
- NGK — BKR6EYA11
5. Check the gap between the electrodes.
5A-FE, 3S-FE, 4S-FE:
- Nominal clearance - 1.0-1.1 mm
- Maximum clearance - 1.3 mm
4A-FE, 7A-FE:
- Nominal clearance - 1.2-1.3 mm
- Maximum clearance - 1.5 mm
7. Clean spark plugs.
If the electrodes show traces of wet carbon deposits, dry them and then remove them with a suitable solvent. If the electrodes have traces of oil, then first remove them with gasoline.
Then clean the spark plugs with a spark plug cleaner, blowing air at a pressure not exceeding 588 kPa (6 kg/cm2) for no more than 20 seconds.
8. Replace the spark plugs by tightening them.
- Tightening torque - 18 Nm
9. Connect the high voltage wires to the spark plugs.
