Caution! Gasoline is extremely flammable, so exercise extreme caution when working with the fuel system (see paragraph 2).
1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system (see paragraph 2). Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sensor assembly from the fuel tank (see paragraph 5).
Removal and installation
Models produced before 2000
3. Remove the retainer securing the pressure regulator to the fuel filter, then loosen the hose clamp connected to the regulator and disconnect the hose (see Figure 6.3).
Figure 6.3. Location of the clamp, retainer and pressure regulator mounting screw - models produced before 2000.
4. Loosen the regulator mounting screw and separate the regulator from the fuel pump assembly.
5. The regulator is installed in the reverse order of removal.
Models produced since 2001
6. Remove the mounting plate from the fuel pump assembly (see paragraph 5).
7. Disconnect the return calibrated tube from the fuel pressure regulator.
8. Separate the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel pump assembly (see figure 6.8).
Figure 6.8. Carefully pry the fuel pressure regulator flange away from the fuel pump housing - models produced since 2001.
9. Installation of the fuel pressure regulator is carried out in the reverse order of its removal. Be sure to change the sealing ring (see figure 6.9) on the regulator.
Figure 6.9. Remember to replace the O-ring on the fuel pressure regulator before installing the regulator into the fuel pump.
