Distributor (1996 and 1997 models with gasoline engines)

Removal

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

2. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the distributor.

3. Locate the raised number on the distributor cap. It indicates the high-voltage wire terminal to the spark plug of cylinder No. 1. If the terminal is not marked on the distributor cap, find the spark plug of cylinder No. 1 and determine the correct terminal using its high-voltage wire. The cylinder arrangement diagrams are given in Chapter 1A Specifications.

4. Remove the distributor cap (see chapter 1A) and turn the engine crankshaft until the distributor rotor is positioned opposite the spark plug contact of cylinder No. 1 (the procedure for setting TDC is described in Chapter 2A).

5. Apply alignment marks to the distributor base and engine block to avoid installation errors (see Figure 9.5).

Figure 9.5. Apply alignment marks to the base of the distributor housing and the cylinder head (shown by arrow).

Also remove the distributor cap and make a mark on the edge of the distributor housing just opposite the rotor tip.

6. Loosen the distributor clamp bolt, then pull the distributor straight out of the cylinder block.

The original version is published on the website [www.ToyotaMAN.ru]

Warning. Do not turn the crankshaft with the distributor removed, otherwise the timing marks will become useless.

Installation

Note: If the engine crankshaft was turned while the distributor was removed, the piston of cylinder #1 must be set to TDC (top dead center) (see Chapter 2A) and install the distributor housing and runner in accordance with this.

7. Install a new sealing ring.

8. Align the connecting protrusion of the distributor shaft with the groove in the cylinder block (see Figure 9.8).

Figure 9.8. Align the connecting protrusion of the distributor shaft with the groove in the housing.

9. Insert the distributor into the engine in exactly the same position relative to the cylinder block as it was before removal.

10. If the distributor does not fit properly in the cylinder block, recheck the alignment marks on the base of the distributor housing and the cylinder block to ensure that the distributor housing is exactly in the same position relative to the block as it was before removal. Also check that the contact of the runner is aligned with the mark on the edge of the housing that was applied during removal.

11. The rest of the distributor installation procedure is performed in reverse order.

12. Tighten the distributor clamp bolt securely.
