Warning! The models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), also known as the "air bag system". To prevent accidental deployment of the air bags, which could result in injury, be sure to disable the air bag system before working near its components (see chapter 12).
Removal
1. Turn the steering wheel so that the wheels are facing straight ahead. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, then disconnect the ground cable from the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
2. Pry up and remove the small covers on each side of the steering wheel and loosen the Torx screws securing the airbag module to the steering wheel (Figure 16.2). Loosen each screw just enough to align with the groove around the circumference of the hole.
Note: It is not necessary to remove the screws completely.

3. Pull the airbag module out of the steering wheel and disconnect the module's electrical connector (Fig. 16.3).

Caution! When carrying, hold the airbag module with the decorative cover facing away from you. Place the module in a safe place with the decorative cover facing up.

4. Loosen the steering wheel mounting nut and then mark the position of the steering shaft relative to the hub (if the markings have not been applied previously or the previously made marks are not aligned), to simplify installation and maintain steering wheel alignment (Fig. 16.4).

5. Using a puller, disconnect the steering wheel from the steering shaft (Fig. 16.5).

Caution: Do not tap the shaft when removing the steering wheel.
If the coil spring needs to be removed, remove the steering column covers, disconnect the electrical connector and unhook the three claws, then remove the spring from the column.
Note: On 2003 and earlier Lexus models, to remove the coil spring, remove the coil spring retaining hardware from the multifunction switch housing.
Installation
6. Point the front wheels straight ahead. Use your hands to turn the coil spring counterclockwise until you feel a noticeable resistance. Turn the spring clockwise approximately two and a half turns and align the two arrows (Fig. 16.6).

7. To install the wheel, align the mark on the steering wheel hub with the mark on the shaft and install the wheel on the shaft. Screw on the nut and tighten it to the specified torque specified in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter.
8. Connect the airbag module electrical connectors and other electrical connectors. Make sure that the electrical connector locking elements are secured to the module.
9. Install the airbag module and tighten the Torx screws to the specified torque as shown in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter.
10. Connect the ground wire to the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
