Warning! Brake pads generate brake dust, which contains asbestos, which is harmful to health, so do not use compressed air or inhale the dust when cleaning brake pads.
Attention! To clean the brake mechanisms, use only a special brake cleaner.
Note. Removing the hub and replacing the bearing requires special equipment and tools, as well as skill, so it is recommended that this work be done at a service station. The only thing that can be done at home is to first remove the steering knuckle with the hub.
Removing
On all-wheel drive models, loosen the nut securing the drive shaft to the rear wheel hub.
Block the front wheels with chocks. Raise the rear of the car and place it on stands. Remove the wheel.
Remove the brake drum. On 1996 and 1997 single drive axle models and up to 2001 all-wheel drive models, remove the brake pads, disconnect the parking brake cable from the rear brake guard, and disconnect the brake pipe from the brake slave cylinder.
On all-wheel drive models, remove the wheel drive shaft.
Pic. 12.25. Unscrewing the bolts securing the hub to the rear steering knuckle
Remove the four bolts through the holes in the hub (on models up to 2001) or nuts (on models since 2001) fastening the hub to the rear steering knuckle (pic. 12.25).
Remove the rear wheel hub along with the bearing. On 1996 and 1997 single drive axle models and up to 2001 all-wheel drive models, remove the rear brake guard along with the hub. On single drive axle models from 1998 to 2001, re-thread one of the bolts to support the rear brake guard.
On single axle models from 1996 and 1997 and all-wheel drive models prior to 2001, you can press the old bearing out of the hub and press in the new one. This work must be carried out at a service station. On all other models, the hub with bearing is built as a single unit and if the bearing fails, the hub assembly will need to be replaced.
On single drive axle models from 2001 with ABS, remove the speed sensor from the old hub and install on the new hub.
Installation
Install the hub on the rear steering knuckle and screw in the four bolts or nuts. After all bolts or nuts are screwed in, tighten them to the torque specified in the technical data.
On 1996 and 1997 single drive axle models and pre 2001 all wheel drive models, install the brake pads and connect the brake pipe to the brake slave cylinder.
On all-wheel drive models, install the drive shaft.
Install the brake drum and wheel.
On 1996 and 1997 models with one drive axle and all-wheel drive models before 2001, bleed the air from the brake system.
Install the wheel, tighten the nuts, lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel nuts.
On all-wheel drive models, tighten the nut securing the wheel drive shaft to the hub to the torque specified in the technical data and secure it with a cotter pin.
