Note. At the time of preparation of the repair manual, there is no information on the value of the resistance of the primary winding of the ignition coil on models from 1998 to 2000 and data on testing ignition coils / switches on models from 2001.
Note. Check the resistance of the ignition coil windings on a cold engine, as the resistance will be greater on a hot engine. The power windows are switched off immediately.
Check the ignition coils as follows:
Check the resistance of the primary winding to the ignition coil, for which:
- turn off the ignition and disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil;
Pic. 6.1. Ohmmeter connection (1) to the pins of the electrical connector for measuring the resistance of the primary winding of the ignition coil on models from 1996 to 1998
- with an ohmmeter connected to the contacts, measure the resistance, which must correspond to the value given in the technical data, otherwise, replace the ignition coil (pic. 6.1) - ignition coil on models from 1996 to 1998 mounted on a bracket on the bulkhead of the engine compartment;
Check the resistance of the secondary winding of the ignition coil, for which:
- turn off the ignition;
Pic. 6.2. Ohmmeter connection (1) for measuring the resistance of the secondary winding of the ignition coil on models from 1996 to 1998
Pic. 6.3. Ohmmeter connection (1) for measuring the resistance of the secondary winding of the ignition coil on models from 1998 to 2001
- mark and disconnect high-voltage wires from ignition coils; with an ohmmeter connected to one pin of the electrical connector and the pin of the high-voltage wire, measure the resistance (pic. 6.2, 6.3);
- if the resistance is not as specified, replace the ignition coil.
Replace ignition coils as follows:
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the wire «masses» from the battery.
For models from 1996 to 1998, carry out further work in the following order:
- disconnect the electrical connector and high-voltage wire from the ignition coil;
- unscrew the bolts and remove the ignition coil together with the bracket from the partition of the engine compartment;
- unscrew the bolts and remove the ignition coil from the bracket;
For models from 1998 to 2001, work in the following order:
- remove the throttle assembly from the intake manifold;
- remove the air filter cover;
- mark and disconnect electric sockets from each block of coils of ignition;
- mark and disconnect the wires from the spark plugs;
Pic. 6.4. Ignition coils (1) and bracket (2) models from 1998 to 2001
- unscrew the bolts and remove the ignition coil from the engine together with the bracket (pic. 6.4);
- the ignition coil is mounted on a bracket on the left side of the cylinder head;
- unscrew the bolts and remove the ignition coil from the bracket.
For models from 2001, work in the following order:
- remove the front section of the air filter housing;
- each ignition coil/switch unit is attached with one bolt;
- remove the bolt, disconnect the electrical connector and, by pulling up and turning at the same time, remove the ignition coil/commutator assembly from the engine.
Install in the reverse order of removal.
