Checking the windshield wiper motor control circuit

Note: Refer to the wiring diagrams for wire colors and connector pinouts to perform the following tests. To check for voltage at a connector terminal, connect one probe of a 12-volt test light to ground and press the other probe to each connector terminal. If there is voltage at the terminal, the light should come on. If the following checks do not reveal the cause of the malfunction, take the electric motor to a specialized workshop for diagnostics.

1. If the windshield wipers are working slowly, check the battery charge (see chapter 5). If the battery is in good condition, remove the wiper motor and try moving the wiper arms manually. Inspect the wiper linkages and hinges for damage. Lubricate the linkages and joints and repair any damage if necessary. Install the electric motor on the drive. If the windshield wipers are still working slowly, check the condition of the electrical contacts (especially the ground connection) and check for corrosion on them. If the contacts are normal, the electric motor needs to be replaced.

2. If the windshield wipers do not work after power is supplied to the motor, check the corresponding fuse (see Figure 11.2).

If the fuse is intact, connect one end of the cigarette lighter wire to the negative terminal of the electric motor and the other to the ground and turn on the engine. If the windshield wipers now operate normally, reconnect the motor ground. If the windshield wipers operate as before, turn the wiper mode switch to the HI position and check for voltage at the motor power connector.

Note: To access the motor power connector, you must remove the grill panel under the windshield (see chapter 11).

3. If there is power supply to the connector, remove the electric motor from the vehicle and supply power to it through protected (with fuses) connect the cigarette lighter cables directly from the battery. If the electric motor operates normally, check the wiper linkages and hinges (see point 1). If the electric motor still does not operate normally, it will need to be replaced. If there is no voltage at the motor power connector, check the voltage at the motor control circuit relay. If the relay is receiving power but the motor is not, check the switch. If the switch is functional, check the relay as described in paragraph 5.

4. If the time intervals (pauses) in the operation of the windshield wipers are violated, check the integrity of all wires connecting the mode switch and the windshield wiper control module.

5. If the windshield wipers stop when turned off but do not return to their original position, check the voltage at the "park" terminal of the motor power connector with the steering column switch in the off position (ignition key in the ON position). If there is no voltage, check the integrity of the wiring between the motor and the fuse panel.

Removal and installation

6. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

7. Marking the position of the brushes (by sticking strips of tape) on the windshield, remove the leash with the brush (or both leashes with brushes) from the car (see figure 11.7, a, b).

Note: Be sure to disconnect the fluid supply hose from the leash.

8. Remove the grill panel under the windshield (see chapter 11).

9. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the windshield wiper motor and remove the nuts securing the windshield wiper motor/drive assembly (see Figure 11.9).

10. Lift and remove the windshield wiper motor/drive assembly from the grille panel.

11. Loosen the electric motor mounting nuts and separate it from the drive mechanism (see figure 11.11).

12. Install the electric motor in the reverse order of removal.

13. Separate the rear door trim panel section (see chapter 11).

14. Carefully peel back the plastic film (if any) to access the service opening.

15. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor wiring connector and unscrew its mounting bolts (see Figure 11.15).

16. Lift the electric motor assembly slightly and remove it from the door.

17. Install the electric motor in the reverse order of removal.
