Crankshaft position sensor (CPS)
Removal
1. The crankshaft position sensor determines the injection timing and ignition timing for each cylinder. In models produced before 2000, the crankshaft position sensor is located under the timing belt cover near the crankshaft crank mechanism. In models produced since 2001, the crankshaft position sensor is installed on the timing chain cover near the crankshaft pulley. Failure of the crankshaft position sensor and its circuit will cause the corresponding fault code to be stored in the ECM memory (see paragraph 2).
2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
3. Working under the vehicle, remove the wheel arch liner (see chapter 11).
4. In models produced before 2000, to access the crankshaft position sensor, it is necessary to remove the timing cover (see figure 9.4,a,b); this procedure is described in chapter 2A.

5. Disconnect the wiring connector from the crankshaft position sensor (see Figure 9.5).

6. Loosen the mounting bolt and disconnect the sensor (see Figure 9.6).

Installation
7. Installation of the crankshaft position sensor is carried out in the reverse order of its removal.
