Attention! It is understood that the work is carried out with the correct installation of the ignition distributor (if a distributor is provided). If it is necessary to restore the correct position of the distributor, then determine the engine stroke by the feeling of compression in the 1st cylinder with the candle turned out, then align the ignition timing marks (see below).
Installing the piston of the 1st cylinder at the TDC of the compression stroke is necessary to perform adjustment and adjustment work (valve adjustment, ignition timing, etc.).
1. Move selector to Neutral or Park (on a / t) or in neutral (on a manual transmission). Disconnect the connectors from the coil (coils) ignition.

2. Through the wire from the candle of the 1st cylinder (or according to the attached diagram) find the corresponding terminal on the cover of the ignition distributor and mark it with a risk on the housing. Remove the distributor cap.
3. Turn the crankshaft with a wrench on the head of the pulley bolt clockwise until the risks on the crankshaft pulley align with the mark "0" on a fixed scale.
4. If the pointer of the distributor slider is opposite the risks on the distributor housing, then the piston of the 1st cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke. If the slider is turned 180°from the risks, then turn the crankshaft 1 turn, after which the piston of the 1st cylinder will be set to the TDC of the compression stroke.
5. In this case, the marks on the scale and the pulley must be aligned, and the slider pointer must be opposite the risk, indicating the output of the 1st cylinder.
6. Designate the terminals of other wires in accordance with the order of operation of the engine. By turning the crankshaft further clockwise relative to the TDC position of the 1st cylinder, you can set the piston of each cylinder to TDC, aligning the slider pointer with the pin marks.

7. Unscrew the spark plug of the 1st cylinder and connect the compression gauge through a hose about 150 mm long, screwing the hose fitting into the hole for the spark plug.
8. Turn the crankshaft until the compression pressure begins to rise as the marks on the pulley and on the scale approach each other. After passing the marks, remove the meter and turn the crankshaft further 2 turns.
Attention! The most accurate setting of the piston at TDC of the compression stroke on such engines is achieved by simultaneously matching the marks on the crankshaft pulley and on the camshaft sprockets (see subsection 3.1.7).
