Procedure for loosening cylinder head bolts
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence
Attention! Work is performed on a cold engine.
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery from ground.
2. Drain the coolant.
3. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
4. Remove the valve body, injectors and fuel distributor.
5. Remove the intake manifold.
6. Remove the exhaust manifold.
Note: The intake manifold and exhaust manifolds can be removed together with the cylinder head for final disassembly on the stand.
7. Remove the generator and distributor.
8. Remove the camshaft gear with the chain, temporarily supporting it on the chain guide.
9. Remove the camshafts and tappets.
10. Loosen the power steering pump mounting bolts and move the pump to the side without disconnecting the hoses. Mark and disconnect the remaining parts (cooling system pipes, cables, hoses and wiring).
11. Loosen the mounting bolt (indicated by the arrow), remove the oil level indicator.
12. Remove 2 chain cover bolts.
13. Loosen the cylinder head bolts by loosening each bolt 1/4 turn at a time. Loosen the bolts in the sequence shown (see Fig. Cylinder Head Bolt Loosening Procedure). Inspect the bolts; if any deformation or damage to the threads is detected, replace the bolts.
14. Remove the cylinder head. If the head does not come off, carefully pry the head off by placing a screwdriver on the power steering pump bracket.
15. Remove the remaining parts from the head, which is necessary for inspection and thorough cleaning. Cylinder head repair procedures are described in subsection 3.3.6).
Installation
1. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block.
2. Carefully (taking care to prevent dirt from getting into the holes) scrape off any carbon deposits and remaining gasket material.
3. Check the split surfaces of the cylinder head and block for burrs, chips, dents and other damage. Minor damage can be removed with a file; in case of serious damage, the head or block must be re-ground.
4. Blow out all passages and openings with compressed air.
5. Reinstall all parts removed during head disassembly.
6. Place the new gasket on the cylinder block, aligning it with the pins.
7. Carefully install the head on the cylinder block, without disturbing the position of the gasket. Lubricate the thrust surfaces of the bolt heads with engine oil.
8. Screw the cylinder head bolts back into place by hand. Screw the short bolts on the intake side and the long bolts on the exhaust side. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque in the sequence shown (see Fig. Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence). At the 2nd and 3rd tightening stages, the bolts are turned by 1/4 turn (90°).
9. Then the assembly is performed in the reverse order. Fill the cooling system with liquid, add oil. Start the engine, make sure there are no leaks. Set the ignition timing and test the vehicle's performance.
