Models with a four-cylinder engine
Note. The CMP sensor is located on the left end of the cylinder head.
1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
2. If necessary, remove the intake air duct to get more room to work (see paragraph «Air filter housing - removal and installation» in chapter 4).
3. Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector (pic. 4.3).
Pic. 4.3. To remove the CMP sensor from the cylinder head on a four-cylinder engine, disconnect the electrical connector (1) and align the sensor mounting bolt (2)
4. Turn out a bolt of fastening of the CMP sensor and remove the sensor. If you are going to install the same sensor, check the condition of the o-ring. Replace o-ring if damaged.
5. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
Models with V6 engine
Application. There are two CMP sensors, one for each intake camshaft (on Lexus and Toyota vehicles they are called WT-i sensors because their signals are used by the PCM to determine the optimum valve timing for the intake camshaft). CMP sensors are located on the left end (on the driver's side) front and rear cylinder heads.
6. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
7. Remove the engine cover (see paragraph «Intake manifold - removal and installation» in chapter 2B).
CMP sensor for front cylinder head
Note. The CMP sensor for the front cylinder head is located on the left front corner of the cylinder head, just below the cylinder head cover above the starter motor.
8. Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector (pic. 4.8).
Pic. 4.8. To disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector for the front cylinder head on VB engines, press the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connector
9. Turn out a bolt of fastening of the CMP sensor (pic. 4.9) and remove the sensor.
Pic. 4.8. To remove the CMP sensor from the front cylinder head to the V6 engine, unscrew this bolt
10. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
CMP sensor for rear cylinder head
Note. The CMP sensor for the rear cylinder head is located on the left rear corner of the cylinder head. Access to it is difficult, but possible.
11. Release nuts of fastening of the left forward wheel. Raise the front of the car and place secure supports under it. Remove the wheel
12. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right so that the brake disc does not interfere with you, and then inspecting the area between the upper rear part of the protruding section of the gearbox housing and the anti-roll bar, locate the CMP sensor (pic. 4.12).
Pic. 4.12. Access to the CMP sensor for the rear cylinder head is possible through the left wheel arch after removing the corresponding wheel. To remove the sensor, press the locking tab (1) and disconnect the electrical connector, and then unscrew the sensor mounting bolt (2)
13. Disunite an electric socket of the gauge.
14. Turn out a bolt and remove the gauge.
15. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
