Caution: Wait until the engine has cooled down completely before starting this procedure.
Models with four-cylinder engine
Note: The knock sensor is located on the underside of the cylinder block and must be accessed by removing the intake manifold.
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
2. Remove the intake manifold (see chapter 2A).
3. Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector.
4. Unscrew the sensor mounting nut and remove the sensor.
5. When installing the sensor, tilt the sensor electrical terminal slightly below the horizontal. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Securely tighten the sensor mounting nut to the specified torque specified in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter.
Models with V6 engine
Note: The knock sensors are located in the gap between the cylinder heads and require removal of the intake manifold to access them.

6. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
7. Remove the upper and lower intake manifolds (see chapter 2B) and the coolant connecting hose (fig. 5.23 in Chapter 2B).
8. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the knock sensors (Fig. 7.8).

9. On 1999-2003 models, remove the sensors (Fig. 7.8). On 2004 and later models, remove the sensor mounting nuts.
10. When installing sensors on 2004 and later models, tilt the sensor electrical terminals slightly below horizontal. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the sensors or sensor mounting nuts to the specified torque as shown in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter.
