Checking the fuel evaporative emission control system

1. The function of the fuel vapor recovery system is to remove these vapors from the fuel tank and the rest of the fuel system and accumulate them in the carbon adsorber for combustion during engine operation.

2. The most common sign of a faulty fuel vapor recovery system is a strong smell of gasoline in the engine compartment (models produced before 2000) or from under a car (models produced since 2001). If you smell gasoline, check the charcoal canister. On models produced before 2000, it is located in the rear left corner of the engine compartment (see Figure 28.2,a).

Figure 28.2,a. Inspect the carbon adsorber and all its hoses and connections. The location of the adsorber is shown on models produced before 2000.

On models produced since 2001, it is located under the car on the left side, next to the fuel tank (see Figure 28.2,b).

Figure 28.2, b. On models produced since 2001, the carbon adsorber is installed on the bottom on the left (the lid is removed).

Inspect the canister and all its hoses for damage.

3. For more information on the operation of the carbon adsorber system, see. v chapter 6A.
