Rear crankshaft oil seal

1. Remove the gearbox (see chapter 7A or 7B).

2. Remove the flywheel/faceplate (see paragraph 14).

3. Having marked the depth of the old oil seal and its position in the mounting hole, carefully pry the oil seal with a screwdriver and pull it out of the mounting hole (see Figure 16.3).

Figure 16.3. Carefully pry the old seal out of the mounting hole using a screwdriver. To make this operation easier, you can cut the working edges of the seal with a sharp knife or razor blade.

Try not to damage the crankshaft and the seal bore (a scratch on the crankshaft can cause a leak). Wipe the oil seal seat clean.

4. Lubricate the working lips of the new oil seal and the crankshaft journal with multi-purpose grease and carefully place the oil seal on the crankshaft with the working lips facing inward. To install a new oil seal, it is preferable to use a special mandrel. If you don't have one, you can use a large socket head, a piece of pipe, or any other suitable tool. Press the seal evenly into the mounting hole to the depth marked during removal (see Figure 16.4).

Figure 16.4. Press the new oil seal into the mounting hole using a special mandrel. Make sure that the seal is seated evenly and without distortions and that it is deep enough.

5. Install the flywheel/faceplate (see paragraph 14).

6. Install the gearbox (see chapter 7A or 7B).
