The vehicles covered in this manual may be equipped with several types of automatic transmissions.

Note. In fact, the gearbox is combined into a single unit with the drive axle, and this unit is fully called "gearbox in a block with a drive axle". Further in the text, this unit will be called simply "gearbox".

Four-cylinder engines are used in combination with the U241-E four-speed transmission. Models from 1999-2003 with V6 engines are equipped with the U140-E transmission (2WD models) or U140-F (4WD models). 2004 and later models with V6 engine are equipped with U151-E transmission (2WD models) or U151-F (4WD models). To adapt to different power and torque values, gearboxes can vary in filling volume, bearing and gear size.

1999-2003 models use the MF2AV or MF2A transfer case with a viscous coupling in the differential. 2004 and later models have a traction control (traction control system) TRAC, which eliminates wheel slip by braking the relevant wheels using the ABS system.

Due to the complexity of the automatic transmissions covered in this manual and the need for specialized equipment to perform most service operations, this chapter presents only those procedures that relate to general diagnostics, routine maintenance, adjustment, removal, and installation.

(The original can be found on this resource: www.TOYOTAMAN.ru)

If the gearbox requires major repairs, you should contact the dealer's technical service department or a specialized service station. However, you can remove and install the gearbox yourself and save money on this, even if the bulk of the repair work is carried out at the service station (provided that proper diagnostics have been performed prior to removal).
