Note. In fact, the gearbox is combined into a single unit with a drive axle, and this unit is fully called «gearbox in a block with a driving axle». Further in the text, this block will be referred to simply «Transmission».
The four-cylinder engines are used in combination with the U241-E four-speed gearbox. Models 1999-2003 with V6 engines are equipped with U140-E gearbox (2WD models) or U140-F (4WD models). 2004 and later V6 models equipped with U151-E gearbox (2WD models) or U151-F (4WD models). In order to adapt to different power ratings and transmitted torques, gearboxes can vary in filling volume, bearing and gear size.
On models 1999-2003. transfer case MF2AV or MF2A with viscous coupling in differential is used. 2004 and later models equipped with traction control (traction control) TRAC, which eliminates wheel slip by braking the corresponding wheels using the ABS system.
Due to the complexity of the design of the automatic transmissions covered in this manual and the need for special equipment to perform most service tasks, this chapter contains only those procedures that relate to general diagnostics, routine maintenance, adjustment, removal and installation.
If the transmission requires a major overhaul, contact the dealer's service department or a specialist workshop for this. However, you can remove and install the gearbox yourself and save on this, even if the main repair work is carried out at a service station (provided that a proper diagnosis has been made prior to removal).
