For vehicles with cruise control, when using cruise control, even if downshifting with the overdrive switch, engine braking will not work because cruise control is not cancelled.
Normal driving
Start the engine. The transmission must be in position "P" or "N".
While pressing the brake pedal with your foot, switch the selector lever to the position "D" - The automatic transmission system will select the most appropriate gear for the operating conditions, such as normal cruising, hill climbing, heavy towing, etc. Always turn on the overdrive switch for better fuel economy and a quieter ride. If the engine coolant temperature is too low, the transmission will not upshift when the overdrive switch is turned on.
Attention! Never put your foot on the accelerator pedal while shifting.
Release the parking brake and brake pedal. Depress the accelerator pedal slowly for a smooth start.
Using engine braking
To use engine braking, you can downshift the transmission as follows:
Turn off the overdrive switch. Turn on indicator light "O/D OFF", and the transmission will downshift to third gear.
Switch to position "2". The transmission will downshift to second gear when the speed drops to or below the speed shown here, and more efficiency will be gained from engine braking.
5S-FE engine | 101 km/h |
Engine 1MZ-FE | 122 km/h |
Turn into position "L". The transmission will downshift to first downshift when the speed drops to or below the speed shown here, and maximum efficiency from engine braking will be obtained.
5S-FE engine | 47 km/h |
Engine 1MZ-FE | 55 km/h |
For vehicles with cruise control, if cruise control is used, even if downshifting with the overdrive switch, engine braking will not work because cruise control is not cancelled.
Use of provisions "2" And "L"
Regulations "2" And "L" are used for heavy engine braking, as already described.
When installing the lever is selected in position "2" or "L". You can also start driving the car, as with the lever in the position "D".
When the selector lever is in the position "2" the vehicle will start in first gear and automatically shift to second gear.
When the selector lever is in position "L", the transmission will be engaged in first gear.
Backward movement
Stop the vehicle completely.
Parking
Stop the vehicle completely. Pull the parking brake lever all the way up to securely apply the parking brake. Pressing the brake pedal down, set the selector lever to the position "P".
Attention! Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopping with the engine running.
Rocking the car if it's stuck
If the car is stuck in snow, mud, sand, etc., you can try to rock it back and forth. Do not attempt this procedure if there are people or objects near the vehicle.
If the indicator light is flashing "O/D OFF"
Contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. There may be a problem with the transmission system.
