Replace in the following order:
  • remove the pulley/vibration damper from the crankshaft;
  • mark the position and installation depth of the old sealing ring;

Figure 3.87. Removing the front crankshaft seal ring from the timing chain cover

  • use a special tool or a large screwdriver to remove the sealing ring from the chain cover (figure 3.87). Be careful not to damage the chain cover and crankshaft;
  • clean the sealing ring seat. Lubricate the outer surface of the sealing ring with engine oil;
  • using a tubular mandrel with an outside diameter slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the ring, install the sealing ring into place. Check that the ring is installed without distortion and to the same depth as the previously installed ring;

Figure 3.88. Installing the bushing on the pulley/vibration damper hub

  • check the condition of the surface on the pulley/damper hub that contacts the sealing ring. If the hub surface has grooves from prolonged contact with the sealing ring, install a bushing supplied as spare parts onto the hub to restore the surface (figure 3.88). The bushing can be installed by pressing it with a hammer through a wooden block;
  • lubricate the hub or bushing on the hub with fresh engine oil and install the pulley/vibration damper onto the crankshaft;
  • install a special device on the pulley/vibration damper to prevent it from turning, and use a large-arm socket wrench to screw in the central bolt and tighten it to a torque of 170 N·m.

Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
