Crankshaft oil seal on the timing belt side

1. Remove the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket (see paragraph 7).

2. After marking the depth of the oil seal seat in the mounting hole, carefully pry it up with a screwdriver and pull it out of the oil pump housing (see Figure 8.2,b).

Figure 8.2, b....pry it up with a screwdriver and pull it out of the mounting hole.

Try not to damage anything - neither the oil pump unit, nor the crankshaft, nor the mounting hole for the oil seal (a scratch on the crankshaft can cause a leak). The process of removing the old oil seal will be significantly easier if you cut its sealing edge with a sharp knife (see Figure 8.2,a).

3. Clean the seal bore and lubricate the outside of the new seal with motor oil or multi-purpose grease. Also lubricate the working lips of the new oil seal with general-purpose grease.

4. Place the new oil seal on the crankshaft and press it into place using the crankshaft sprocket and the center bolt (see figure 8.4,a,6).

Ensure proper seating of the seal and its depth by lightly tapping the working edges with a hammer through a wooden block (see Figure 8.4,c).

After installing the oil seal, check that the spring is in place.

5. Install the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt (see paragraph 7).
