Circuit for checking battery charge current
1. Generator; 2. Voltmeter; 3. Battery; 4. Disconnect the wire; from output B; 5. Ammeter
1. If the battery charging circuit is faulty, perform the following checks before concluding that the alternator has failed.
2. Check the condition and tension of the alternator belt.
3. If signs of wear are found, replace the belt.
4. Check the tightening of the alternator mounting bolts and the belt tension adjusting bolt.
5. Check the wiring of the generator and the voltage regulator, the reliability of fastening and the condition of the connectors.
6. Check fusible links, if burnt jumpers of inserts are found, find out the cause and eliminate.
7. Start the engine and check the sound of the generator (a howling or screeching sound indicates worn bearings).
8. Check the density of the electrolyte in the battery.
9. If the density is low, charge the battery (This item does not apply to maintenance-free batteries).
10. Check if the battery is fully charged (if the battery section is faulty, it can be recharged).
11. Check battery voltage with engine off. The voltage should be around 12V.
12. Start the engine and check the voltage again, which should now be between 13.5 and 15.1 volts.
13. Turn on high beam headlights. During normal operation of the charge system, the voltage should drop and rise again.
14. If the voltage is higher than the normal charge voltage, then replace the voltage regulator.
15. If the voltage is below normal, then check the regulator and alternator by doing the following.
16.. Remove the back cover from the generator, connect terminal F to ground, start the engine, read the voltage on the battery and compare with the standard one.
17. If the voltage is higher than standard, replace the voltage regulator.
18. If the voltage is below standard, then check the generator (or in the absence of an ammeter, take it to a car service workshop).
19. The generator is checked according to the scheme (see fig. Circuit for checking battery charge current).
20. Bring the engine speed up to 2000 rpm, measure the current with consumers turned off and on (high beam headlights and heater fan, switched on at maximum speed).
21. If the measured current is less than the standard, repair or replace the generator.
