30. The transmission fluid level should only be checked when the transmission is at normal operating temperature (when she is hot). The transmission is considered to be warm enough after the vehicle has been driven for more than 15 km (25 km in cold climate conditions), when the liquid temperature is about 70-80°C.
Warning. If the vehicle has been driven for a long time at high speed or in city traffic in hot weather or towed a trailer immediately before the test, an accurate reading of the fluid level cannot be obtained. Allow liquid to cool for approximately 30 minutes.
31. If the vehicle was not in motion immediately prior to welding, park it on a level, level surface, apply the parking brake and start the engine. With the engine running at idle, depress the brake pedal and move the selector lever through all ranges, starting and ending with park gear.
32. Still with the engine idling, remove the dipstick from its tube (pic. 4.32,a). Check the fluid level on the dipstick (pic. 4.32b) and pay attention to her condition.
Ras. 4.32 a. The dipstick for measuring the level of transmission fluid in an automatic transmission in a block with a drive axle is located next to the battery
Pic. 4.32b. If the transmission fluid is cold, the level should be between the two lower marks; if the gearbox is at normal operating temperature, the level should be between the upper marks on the dipstick
33. Wipe the fluid off the dipstick with a clean rag and reinsert the dipstick back into the tube until it stops.
34. Remove the dipstick again and take a level reading. If the transaxle is cold, the level should be in the COLD range (cold state) or COOL (cool state) on the probe. If the box is warm, the level should be in the HOT range (warm state). If the level is at the lower end of either range, add the prescribed transmission fluid through the level tube. Use a funnel.
35. Only enough of the recommended fluid should be added to top up the transaxle to the correct level. Approximately half a liter of liquid is required to raise the level from the lower mark to the upper mark when the fluid is hot. Therefore, add liquid in small portions and perform periodic level checks until you reach the norm.
36. Simultaneously with leveling, the condition of the liquid should also be checked. If the fluid at the end of the dipstick is black or dark reddish brown, or smells of burning, the fluid should be replaced (see paragraph 23). If you are in doubt about the condition of the fluid, purchase a small amount of new fluid and compare both for color and smell.
