Tightening order for cylinder head bolts on 3.0L engines
1. Right head
2. Towards the front
3. Left head
Tightening procedure for cylinder head bolts on 3.4L engines
1. Bolt with 12-point slots
2. Towards the front
Removing
1. Disconnect the battery from the ground.
2. Drain the coolant.
3. Remove the equalizing chamber, fuel pipes and nozzles.
4. Remove the exhaust manifold.
5. Remove alternator and distributor (if provided).
6. Remove the intake manifold
7. Remove the toothed belt, camshaft sprockets and upper tensioner pulley.
8. Remove the upper belt cover.
9. Remove the camshaft from the dismantled head.
10. On 3.4L engines, remove the female bolts (one per head) (1 - 6-sided key).
11. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in sequence, backing out each bolt 1/4 turn at a time (see fig. The procedure for tightening the cylinder head bolts on 3.0L engines or fig. The procedure for tightening the cylinder head bolts on engines 3.4, l).
12. Carefully remove the cylinder head by lightly tapping it through the wood spacer.
13. Follow the same procedures for the other head.
Installation
1. Clean the split surfaces of the cylinder head and block.
2. Carefully (making sure that dirt does not get into the holes) scrape off carbon deposits and any remaining gasket material.
3. Check for scoring, chips, gouges and other damage on the split planes of the head and cylinder block. Minor damage can be repaired with a needle file, in case of serious damage, the head or block must be reground.
4. Blow out all channels and holes with compressed air, drive the threads with a tap.
5. Drive the threads of the bolts with a die.
6. Lay new gaskets on the cylinder block, orienting them over the pins.
7. Carefully install the head on the cylinder block without disturbing the position of the gasket.
8. Lubricate the thrust surfaces of the bolt heads with engine oil.
9. Screw the cylinder head bolts back into place by hand. Gradually tighten the bolts to the torque of the 1st stage (see subsection 3.2.1) in the specified sequence (see fig. The procedure for tightening the cylinder head bolts on 3.0L engines or fig. The procedure for tightening the cylinder head bolts on engines 3.4, l). Bolts with internal slots do not wrap.
10. Tighten the bolts in 2 steps, 90°each step, following the sequence.
11. On 3.4L engines, tighten the socket bolt to the specified torque.
12. Follow the same steps for the other head.
13. Further assembly is carried out in the reverse order. Fill the cooling system with liquid. Start the engine, check for leaks.
